自分がまだルールを全く覚えていない頃、この本と出合いました。
巻頭マンガや絵があるので親しみやすく、
初心者にも分かりやすく詳しい役の解説もあります。
役の狙い所や、リーチを掛けるタイミングなども載っていて、
中級者でも読んでみると普段の思い込みを直せると思います。
かなり初心者向きの解説本ですので、初心者の方にオススメです。

一つのパズルを解き終えると、すぐ次に進みたくなります。難易度は高いですが、答えが裏に載っているので、チェックしながら解いていくと簡単です。そうしているうちに新しい単語や概念など、いろんな知識がつきます。パズルが好きな日本人にも、日本語を勉強している外国人にもお勧めします。
I've been studying Japanese for 20 years, and it's hard to find new ways to study anymore, but to my surprise I've found that I can enjoy Japanese crossword puzzles like the ones in this book. After a few failed attempts before, when I asked Japanese friends for help with clues and they didn't know either, I always thought Japanese crossword puzzles were nearly impossible to solve for non-native speakers. Not so. The puzzles in this book are fairly small, printed on grids of 9 X 11 or 9 x 13, so they can be solved in your spare time at one sitting. Although I've never yet gotten all of the answers to a puzzle correct, I had a lot of fun trying, and I learned some new words (and new ways of thinking of words I already knew) by looking at the answers in the back. I would recommend this book to advanced students of Japanese who are looking for a new challenge and a different way to study the language. Many of the clues are riddles that get you to think outside the box...the fun of these puzzles is that the answers are not always straightforward! The hardest hints to guess may become good conversation-starters with Japanese friends. Sometimes they provide insight into Japanese traditions and history.
I also like Nikoli's quarterly puzzle magazine.
