当初"OFFERING"というアルバム名でデビューしたが、後に"Ticket to ride"とアルバム名を変更した伝説のアルバムだ。アルバム名ともなっている゛Ticket to ride"は彼らが最も影響を受けた3B(ビーチ・ボーイズ、ビートルズ、バート・バカラック）の一つビートルズの作品のカバーだが、後にベストアルバムなどに収録されているのはカーペンターズとしての地位を確立してから再録音されたものだろう。このアルバムに収録されているこの曲を聴くと、カレンのあの宝石の歌声の原石を聴くことができる。まだ荒削りだが、カーペンターズのとんでもない才能を垣間見ることができる貴重なアルバムだ。リチャードの見事なアレンジ、カレンのしなやかなドラム・スティックさばきと珠玉の歌声、まさにジャズに原点を発する「カーペンターズ」という新たなジャンルの誕生に立ち会うことができる唯一無二のアルバムだろう。

While there are plenty of moments on this album that make it a worthwhile purchase (Prologue, Thanks For Chicago Mr. James, Time Operator, Cowbells Shakin'), Til The Band Comes In remains a frustrating curiousity for fans enthralled by Scotts 1 to 4, the first four post Walkers solo albums. While hints of the earlier albums' darker, more European moments appear on this outing, there are too many standards and covers that imply a step backwards (much of the Walker Brothers recordings were padded by covers, with little room for originals), since Scott had reached album 4 as the sole songwriter. He also seemed in almost complete control of the proceedings, which is absent on Til The Band... The most likely explanation would be record company pressure, brought on by the first 4 albums' diminishing returns.
Either way, it's a record that disappoints, yet pleases thanks to Scott's astounding voice, and the lush arrangements that contribute to the bigger numbers. We can do without Reuben James, however, a country number first popularized by--ahem--Kenny Rogers and the First Edition! Gripes aside, Till The Band Comes In is worth a look for Scott fans.
Twenty-five years later, we got Tilt, and more recently the Drift. It's hard to imagine a more unlikely musical course Scott Walker would take, but think of this album as a stop-gap for sales and contenting record company execs, while the aforementioned more recent recordings--perhaps including Climate of Hunter--are the natural successors to Scott 4.

88年リリースのアルバム。「追憶のブロードウェイ」の大成功を受けて次に製作されたアルバムで、70年代に発表していたポップ・アルバムとは一線を引くような格調の高さを感じてしまう「ポップ」アルバムです。クインシー・ジョーンズがプロデュースした壮大な「愛との出会い」で幕を開け、ミュージカル「オペラ座の怪人」からの「オール・アイ・アスク・オブ・ユー」やシングル・ヒットした当時のバーブラの恋人ドン・ジョンソンとのデュエット「ティル・アイ・ラブド・ユー」、バート・バカラック＆キャロル・ベイヤー・セイガーやお馴染みミシェル・ルグラン＆バーグマン夫妻の作品などを収録。下世話さがないのが、ポップ・アルバムとしては若干マイナスな気もしますね。全米アルバム・チャート第10位を獲得。
