Indeed, recorded live, on the grounds of his estate in Italy somewhere along the road to Turin. Planned and practiced for, only to find out on the morning of that day, about the attacks on the twin towers in New York. Even without hearing the indignation he candidly expressed before the first song (see concert video), the held-back tone is palpable in the first few songs. But one can also sense the increased energy flowing out of him in the later songs. All this only serves to heighten the feel of a concert where the songs are left to touch the audience, without the performer consciously attempting to fire them up into excitement.
With the equally-formidable Kipper on the keyboards, Chris Botti on the trumpet, and Jason Rebello on the piano, Sting remakes his own songs, injects a jazzy beat, and emerging with a soulful-classy masterpiece collection.
"Dienda", tribute to his late friend Kenny Kirkland, is particularly touching.
An album to keep.
