Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly) ex-GI stays in Paris to practice painting. There he is patronized by a jealous Milo Roberts (Nina Foch). Mean time he is trying to make time with a store clerk that is more than she appears to be (Leslie Caron).
Not one of Kelly's best but passable. However even at his best one has to have a taste for that sort of thing. He is sort of a Danny Kay type. His high-water pants are his signature and really look out of place. He can not sing worth beans. However he did do a good job in "What a Way to Go."
Even though this film is not a notable movie it was directed by Vincente Minnelli (1903-1986.) He directed some great movies and some that you would never suspect such as "The Long Long Trailer."

巴里のアメリカ人のＤＶＤは、既に発売されていますが、今回発売のスペシャル版は、完全レストア版です。よって、フィルムの傷の皆無・段調の補正もしっかりしています。おそらく
同時発売予定のブルーレィ版との兼ね合いがあったのかもしれません。
映像がしっかりしたので、ブルーレィ版のほうがかなり楽しみなのは事実です・・・・。
ディスク２の（ダンサーの肖像）は、輸入版しかなかったので、今回 字幕が日本語追加で
ケリーの人生が本当によく解りました。
（メイキング）は、とてもビジュアルで好感がもてます。

この作品のみどころは20世紀最高のアメリカの作曲家であるジョージ・ガーシュインが1928年にパリで作曲した管弦楽曲『巴里のアメリカ人』を中心に全編11曲が散りばめられているところにある。そしてスタジオ内であるが、大戦6年たって活気を取り戻したパリの街をルノアール、ゴッホ、ユトリロ、ロートレック、ルソーらの名画をバックにラスト17分を踊りまくるシーンは見事でした。
ジーン・ケリーの相手役のレスリー・キャロンはケリーが自らパリでスカウトし、この映画のあとも、1953年『リリー』、1954年『ガラスの靴』。1955年『足ながおじさん』などハリウッドで活躍する名女優となった。
助演男優には名ピアニストのオスカー・レヴァントとシャンソン歌手のジョルジュ・ゲタリーがすばらしい演技を披露している。
そして、監督にはMGMミュージカルでは実績があるヴィンセント・ミネリーで、言わずとしれたあの大女優ジュディ・ガーランドの元夫でライザ・ミネリーの父親である。ちょうど1951年3月にジュディと正式離婚をしたばかりで、心気一転この作品にはかなり集中できたのか、すばらしいできとなった。
アカデミー賞作品賞をはじめ７つのオスカーを受賞するMGMミュージカルの大傑作だ。
