次世代DVD発売当初、「Blu-rayよりHD-DVDの方がクオリティが高い」と、マニアや評論家の間で囁かれました。全体的にHD-DVD陣営はスタートからクオリティの高い作品を投入し、逆にBlu-rayはロンチタイトルのクオリティが低かったのが原因ですが、もう一つはHD-DVD版「キングコング」の圧倒的なクオリティの高さでした。特にジャングル等、自然の階調表現(特に明暗部分)が素晴らしい。しかし、BD陣営も「パイレーツオブカリビアン」等の超高画質ソフトを投入し始め、巻き返しを測っています。一般論を言えば、規格は統一された方がいいのかも知れません。しかし、個人的には2規格位ならこのまま競い会ってとことんクオリティ合戦してもらいたいと思うのは不謹慎でしょうか…?(笑)

オープニングでいきなり旅客機が墜落します。ばらばらになった機体のコックピット部分にある通信機を探しに生き残った乗客たちがジャングルに入っていきます。あとはおきまりの巨大生物の襲撃と原住民みたいな連中が出てきます。安っぽいCGにしょぼいストーリーで充分つまらないんですが、原住民みたいな連中が登場してから退屈さが加速していきます。最後に出るでかい猿も大して活躍もせず退場するし、キングコングとLOST話題になってるから二つくっつけちゃおって感じの作品ですかね。

This time Allan Quatermain (Patrick Swayze) and Elizabeth Maitland (Alison Doody) go after her father Dr. Sam Maitland (John Standing). He is held prisoner by nasty natives and they want his key to King Solomon’s mine. They are accompanied by a not so mysterious native Umbopa (Sidede Onyulo). On the way they are encumbered be some bad guys with their own agendas.
I will not go into detail but those loyal to the book and/or familiar with the Stewart Granger version may be disappointed. Thos uneducated may enjoy it to the end.
Very few videos can match or best a book. And this one does not. Yet it does top most of the others attempts as a variation on the story. Being long enough it could have been the book. But it is someone else’s idea of what we want to see. This is well worth watching as its own variation on the story they added a few twists turns and characters. They are probably trying to as an Indiana Jones feel. Alison Doody was in the Indiana Jones movie.

This poor attempt at movie making takes the title of an excellent book by H. Rider Haggard. Add lots of sex and action at the expense of the story and characters. Richard Chamberlain gets to practice his judo positions. Sharon Stone practices other positions before she became famous. On the plus side they did re-introduce Gagoola; she was conspicuously missing form the 1950 Deborah Kerr version. Yet if they did not make this so campy it would have been laughed off the screen.
Jesse Huston (Sharon Stone) convinces Great White Hunter Allan Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) to free her father from the clutches of a dastardly pare of bad guys. All they want is her father’s map to King Solomon’s Mines. Jesse and Allan go through many trials and tribulations in the process.
I will not mention the different trials as part of the fun is the shock value of surprise. However I will say that this may be worth watching so tat you will appreciate the fine production of the 1950 Deborah Kerr version, and better still the original book.
